Either way, if you run or hike this park, you'll love it as much as we do!!! If you just run by to fill a "30 minute time slot" in your vacation, chances are, the next vacation to this area will have a WEEK DEVOTED to this area alone. Seriously, folks!
Awesome trails!
We've been all over, but this is where home is !
This is an easy, outstanding hiking trail through a subtropical east Texas rain forest.... the path is well maintained and mainly flat as it winds through this dense forest along the bottoms and creeks. You can clearly see why this is called the big thicket... as the undergrowth and foliage in some places are so thick, it appears impenetrable. In these spots it is clear this trail was hacked through the forest; and without this trail, a walk in this environment would be difficult to say the least. We hiked for almost three hours, exploring, enjoying, and only saw one other couple, giving the feel that you have the place to yourself... I highly recommend a visit. :-)
They are 33, 31, and 27 now and THEIR CHILDREN are LOVING this park and time with MiMi & PawPaw spent here!!! This place is such a jewel. And IT's SO MUCH NICER NOW WITH 40 YEARS of UPGRADES & IMPROVEMENTS ! ! !
We've raised our children coming to this park / trail to either go to certain sites, or to do the Inner Loop or Outer Loop, or to jog down to Cypress Loop to check on the water levels after a storm..... our children's FONDEST MOMENTS are of various times & instances on these, particular, trails in THIS park ! ! ! Sometimes, the jog was in "muck boots" so we really got an INTENSE WORKOUT ! ! !
If you notice at the sign-up counter that the trail's total loop is over a mile and that's a bit much for your day, we recommend just omitting the long loop returning (if you complete the loop clockwise), and that will take quite a distance off of your hike. The more incredible scenery, in my & my wife's humble opinions, is on all the OTHER segments. We are here 20 + times / year, and HAVE been since 1979! However, if you're really into plant diversities, rapid & diverse soil changes, elevation and canopy differentiation, the LAST LOOP IS FOR YOU ! Actually, you may consider starting the trail in reverse & proceed counter-clockwise!!! That way, you'll get to YOUR most-fun area quicker and may not wish to go anywhere else for a while.....
